Major Global Pharmaceutical - development of Global Trade Management solution

Major global pharmaceutical company:

Global Trade Management solution

Objectives of the project

The client was seeking a solution to reduce the risk and disruptive impacts of shipment non-compliance exposures – caused by the misinterpretation of rules and non-compliance with evolving and increasingly stringent, global import/export regulations.

The solution needed to cover new processes and systems, and to define organisational competences and a strong governance structure, in order to drive cross-border trade compliance globally. It also needed to reduce process complexity and variation, and increase visibility (both internally and outward-facing), in order to be more agile and flexible in accommodating changing supply chain needs across global markets.

Measurable & concrete results

The solution enables greater levels of supply chain responsiveness as well as the fundamentals of compliance risk management. The ‘quick win’ benefits achieved were:

  • Developed processes and governance structure for new organisation
  • Broadened the awareness of compliance risk across the company
  • Managed supply chain security audits and achieved C-TPAT Tier 3 status
  • Significant savings through R&D specialist shipments alignment
  • Significant savings from duty avoidance on three products
  • Avoidance of very significant penalty provision

Key success factors

BearingPoint helped define a clear Business Case – summarising the current situation, quantifying the risks of non-compliance, and defining a clear plan to drive greater levels of visibility, risk management and control.

What BearingPoint did

BearingPoint analysed existing import/export-related risk management and compliance procedures, together with risk factors such as limited operational visibility and reliance on outsourced distribution and broker partners.

Our design work encompassed process definition, systems selection, organisation and governance design, and steps to deliver clear shipment compliance support. BearingPoint also led the implementation in 12 pilot sites across both manufacturing and R&D functions.
