Whether it is for planning a journey, finding traffic information or paying for a mobile ticket, smart phones have been in widespread use in the transport sector. However the full potential of mobile phones has not been fully realized. The European Union for example is supporting intelligent transport systems (ITS) to better connect transport offerings by different modes to the users to form a future single transport system.

Providing transport services and information such as ticket reservation and payments, real time travel information via smartphones is a challenging next step for the industry. It is now up to railways and public transport providers to look beyond their competitive instincts and play an active role in facilitating this shift which will enhance the journey experience for passengers and strengthen public transport as a whole.
