Increasing digitalization and the emergence of new players are transforming the SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) insurance market. There is a shift from the traditional insurer-broker-customer relationship to a more complex interaction of market participants in networks and ecosystems. This article sheds light on the insurancerelated needs of SMEs and identifies how the role of a broker might evolve given the changing environment. In this context, it will be further discussed how insurance carriers and brokers could become an active part of the underserved SME ecosystem by cooperating with other players or by starting to build their own platforms.
