An insight into the Data and Analytics (D&A) team within BearingPoint NL, exciting! My name is Michael van der Wielen and I have the honour to kickstart this new sequence. We as a team want to share some of our experiences and hot topics in this field, not only because this team is still relatively new, but mainly because many interesting activities are undertaken in my team. In this first part I will tell you what we do at D&A and how we have recently used the skills of all the team members to the current COVID-19 situation.

The Story Behind the Team

All kinds of businesses have had in-depth data and analytics applications for decades. These applications have proven to be of value several times in, for example, cost reductions, redesigning processes and improving business strategies. With the growing complexity and amount of data, many businesses are dealing with the growth of data processing every day. The goal of this data processing is that the data should add value to the business in operational, tactical and strategic areas. However, organizing, utilizing and analyzing the data, and thereby unlocking its value, is complex and requires specific methods. This is expected to become even more complicated due to the ever-growing amount and diversity of the data.

Using specific data driven methods to create value and making organizations more data driven is what we are doing within the D&A team. We are doing this at very diverse organizations. For example, predicting the impact of the energy transition at large distribution service operators or creating a search engine for a knowledge institute in the health sector. Doing this together with my colleagues makes my work a lot of fun!

Using D&A in the COVID era

During these times, in which reports about COVID-19 dominate the news, we are also concerned with current events. During a virtual work session we selected and tested various hypotheses about the virus. In the past weeks, a lot has been published in terms of data analysis regarding the virus. Our goal was to take a published hypothesis ​​and look at the data to see if the hypothesis is true or not. During the work session, we gained very interesting insights. One group looked at the relationship between the mortality rate and the intensity of testing, while the other group focused on the impact of various cultural dimensions on the growth rate of reported cases.
